HMPV Not a New Virus in India, Says Health Ministry

New Delhi, January 6, 2025 – The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is not a new virus in India, according to the Health Ministry. The Ministry confirmed that there is no unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in the country.

HMPV History: HMPV has been known since 2001, with evidence dating back to the late 1950s. Most children develop immunity against it by the age of 10.

  • Tamil Nadu: Two cases in Chennai and Salem; both stable.
  • Gujarat: One case confirmed; health officials assure preparedness.
  • Maharashtra: One case reported; no need for panic according to officials.
  • Rajasthan: A two-month-old infant from Rajasthan admitted in Ahmedabad.
